FlakeHQ Interviews: Dr. John O.A. Pagano
When FlakeHQ correspondent Robin, from Sarasota, Florida, wrote she’d be happy to introduce me to Dr. John O.A. Pagano regarding an interview, I jumped. Pagano is a thorn in the side of every conservative flaker — that is, psoriatics who adhere completely to the conventional line of treatments and therapies.
He’s problematic for the conservatives among us for three reasons:
For years I put off reading Pagano’s book, HEALING PSORIASIS: The Natural Alternative, because I’d heard enough about it to think I’d never willingly adhere to the diet or partake of the “adjunctive” therapies. I also put it off because, for those same years, exciting things were happening with “conventional” psoriasis treatments. First there was the promise of gene therapy (about which I laugh, today) and then the biologics rose up on the horizon and I, like so many others, ran (actually, “am running”) joyfully in that direction.
But now I’ve read the book — and not cursorily. It’s heavily marked up, fattened appreciably by a pad of Post-it notes, and beginning to curl at the open corners. (An aside: The book will be re-issued early next year by M. Evans Publishing Co. of New York and I intend to buy a copy from them, too. Frankly, the book I purchased through Amazon.com this year is beginning to show signs of weathering from the 5 printings and updating it has gone through within the Pagano organization. Evans will no doubt pretty it up in the publishing sense.)
Well, I don’t want to review the book or critique the interview, here. So let me conclude with this: I like the fact that Pagano is a thorn in the side of psoriasis conventionalists. With the best available conventional treatments now costing well in excess of $10,000 per year ... with research funding DOWN ... and with no conventional treatment proving (yet) that it can permanently quell the condition, I like the fact that some sub-population of ours takes John Pagano seriously and is finding what he advocates can really help. Feedback (Fallout?) from Ed’s On Raptiva Article
I received an email with a link to “CafePharma,” where a discussion is going on about my On Raptiva report posted in July. CafePharma is a web site populated by pharmaceutical sales reps. Pharmaceutical sales reps are the people who pitch drugs to doctors. (I’m sure sales reps also exist who pitch OTC products to pharmacists and other retailers.) If you care to read the online discussion (link below) that is occurring about my report, you need to be forewarned that an unflattering picture about the sales reps participating is painted there. What starts out to be a reasonable (if not accurate) assessment of me and my experience on Raptiva quickly deteriorates into an exchange of what I read as online temper-tantrums between reps.
