A&D and a Generic with Zinc
from Rick W.

Hi Ed: I just want to say that I have been a P sufferer since I was 26 years old (late bloomer). For the past 21 years I have tried everything from topical steroids to Enbrel with no real relief. One Doctor had me on Dovonex and I had good results with it until my insurance company stopped paying for it. I was desperate to find something to help with the flakes and redness. At that time my last daughter was still in diapers and we had some A&D ointment in the house and I tried it and had great results. I found even the Generic brand gives me the same results and was a lot cheaper. The kind with zinc (Wal-Mart’s Equate brand) works well and is not as messy or odorous as the A&D. I use the Equate generic during the day and the A&D ointment at night. It has kept my lesions down and manageable for the past 4 years and is a lot healthier than any steroid or systemic immunosuppressant. As for my arthritis, ibuprofen and exercise along with a healthy diet and lots of willpower help overcome those aches and pains. I hope you post this for all the sufferers whose insurance has left them in the cold or those unfortunate to not have any.

Thank you. -Rick W.

Ed’s Response: Thanks for writing, Rick. The archives here contain an impressive and growing list of correspondence from flakers who find A&D helpful. I’m one of them! And the Wal-Mart Equate generic that contains zinc is good to know about. Both vitamin D (the “D” in A&D) and topical zinc are known P-palliatives. Together in an emollient these two ingredients cover a wide swath of non-prescription remedies for P. You’re right to suggest now is a good time to make note of this: 47-million uninsured and a recession chewing away a lot of folks’ disposable incomes. Thanks. -Ed
