Methotrexate’s Dwell Time: When Can Hubby Imbibe Again? Hi Ed! Your site is great and very helpful. My 33 year old husband has recently had a severe flare up, worse than he has ever experienced. To try to gain control over the situation, he has been prescribed a six week treatment of methotrexate. There is one topic on this subject that I have not been able to come across, which is “how long after coming off methotrexate can you resume casual drinking?” As we are young and used to living quite social weekends, he has been waiting to not have to be the sober driver! Would you happen to know the answer? Thanks for your help and a great site! -Valerie V. ***** Ed’s Response: Hi Val; thanks for writing. From what I’ve been able to learn, the effectiveness of MTX stops almost immediately when the regular dosing ceases. I think a more important question than any lingering “mix” of MTX and alcohol after stopping use of the drug is the condition of one’s liver at the time usage ceases. I believe the ban on alcohol consumption while using MTX has more to do with overloading the liver than some combined toxicity. If liver enzyme levels are on an even keel a pint here and there probably won’t hurt, but I’d call the prescribing doctor just to make sure! Best of luck. -Edwww.flakehq.com |
